Robert Balster, a professor with Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, is actively involved in efforts to end the opioid epidemic that is gripping Virginia. 

The Virginia Department of Health reported a 38 percent increase in deaths from prescription opioid and heroin overdoses between 2012 and 2014, and there were more than 986 fatal overdose deaths in Virginia in 2014, according to a report by VCU Health.

Balster is part of a new coalition — the Opioid Awareness and Recovery Coalition — formed to spread education and awareness about the opioid epidemic during September, which is National Recovery Month.
